NaNoWriMo – Preps

In case you are not familiar with the National Novel Writing Month it’s a challenge where the writers must write a manuscript with at least 50,000 words on the month of November. All the writing can only be done there but there is room from preparations in the weeks before that.

Since September is almost over and October is creeping in with the shorter days, the falling leafs and the couch starts to get more tempting. So, this is the ideal time to open up the creative vault and start to prep the challenge. Even if you don’t plan to be a writer, it can still be fun to try something different, and from now on I will leave some tips to get you ready.

What to do in the first week?

Brainstorming, harshly!

The ideal way of getting an idea to work on. What would life be if whales had the ability to fly? What are the secrets of the canine life? The sky is the limit and there is only one rule, no censorship. Anything goes.

Or dear heavens… Characters

If making up an idea is hard maybe you can try building your characters. They move the plot, they create havoc and the make readers fall in love with a story. Characters are crucial for a book and maybe it can be the way to go for you.

Read and Rewrite

Have you ever read a book and thought, “I can do so much better than this!” or”If you could change A or B, the story would be so much better…”. Well, why not do that? It’s simple an exercise of creativity so take the concept, remake the characters and the plot and have fun. This manuscript is just for fun, not to be published so have fun with it.

And there you go. Make notes, maps, charts anything you can think of to get you ready for the challenge. Next week I will bring some websites that might help you. 🙂

May The Almighty GIP be with you, L.T:Htlls
